Finally some results

Hey,

It’s me again, Nick from the Software Team. We are now entering a new exciting period in our experiment since we finally get to see the fruits of our work!

As you know, a lot has changed in our experiment, we have a different aim, a different goal, and that comes, of course, with different hardware. Fortunately, for us in the Software Team, a lot of things can be reused for the new experiment design. We still communicate with our ground-station via the IRIDIUM satellite network, we have a localisation system to guide the retrieval of the experiment, and we have a data storage unit for later analysis.

These three parts are the heart of the on-board data-handling system and most crucial to our whole experiment. Therefore, those are also the first ones we are implementing!

A lot has happened during the summer, we have evaluated different hardware parts, different microcontrollers, libraries, etc. Out of the knowledge, that we gained through that, we can now implement our code.

And since just sitting in front of the computer is no fun, we finally also get to field test our software.

What you can see here is a breadboard model of our localisation system. We have the Arduino Due as the processing brain and the Adafruit Ultimate GPS v3 module with an external antenna.
To test reception under different circumstances, we also covered it with different materials, basically whatever we found lying around campus :b
And of course, we took it for a walk, to be able to see the position change!

All in all, there is still a lot to do for us, but it is nice, to finally see the physical outcome of the hard work everybody is putting into our project!

I think that was it from me!

Cheers,

Nick
